Fatal distracted driving crashes spike in major metro areas, and North Texas drivers are some of the worst offenders.

Daniel Armbruster with AAA Texas says drivers on cell phones, texting or checking the internet, are up to eight times more likely to be involved in a crash.

"These numbers are really alarming, especially when you look at Dallas County. The number of fatal crashes is up 20%, year-to-year, according to Texas Department of Transportation statistics from 2016 to 2017. And really is just paints a picture of what we already know, that distracted driving is not only an epidemic in Texas, but across the nation."

While Dallas County distracted driving fatal crashes are up, Tarrant County's are down slightly.

Harris County saw the biggest increase in distracted driving fatal crashes, up 62%.
