Beachgoers Witness Beautiful 'Fire Rainbow' in NJ

May 28, 2019

(1010 WINS) -- Visitors to the Jersey Shore on Sunday got a front row seat to a beautiful phenomenon known as a "fire rainbow."

Packy McCormick snapped a photo of the rainbow and posted it to Twitter, asking, "I've never seen a rainbow like this. What is it?"

National Weather Service meteorologist Dean Iovino told NJ.com that the occurrence is caused by "sunlight hitting the ice crystals in the high clouds."

"It creates the appearance of the different colors of the rainbow," he said.
