According to The Dallas Morning News, a Dallas man says his Tesla Model S crashed while operating in “autopilot” self-driving mode in Kaufman earlier this month.
Mark Molthan, 44, was driving in the 2000 block of U.S. Highway 175 on Aug. 7 when his vehicle failed to stay in its lane of traffic at a bend and crashed into the guardrail.
Molthan told Bloomberg that he trusted the self-driving system to work, as he had used it many times, and wasn’t paying attention as he reached to get a cloth from the glove box to clean the dashboard just before the incident.
“I used Autopilot all the time on that stretch of the highway,” Molthan told Bloomberg. “But now I feel like this is extremely dangerous. It gives you a false sense of security. I’m not ready to be a test pilot. It missed the curve and drove straight into the guardrail. The car didn’t stop — it actually continued to accelerate after the first impact into the guardrail.”
