Musicians, can you imagine giving up your day job and side gigs to focus solely on your craft and earn enough money to pay the bills (and even put some away in savings)?! Seems like a pipe dream these days, but thanks to Musicbed, a Fort Worth based company, musicians are able to do just that!
Musicbed provides soundtracks and background music for indie films, commercials, and industrials, but also for private videos, like weddings. The company is the brainchild of CEO Daniel McCarthy, who in 2011, was working for a local ad agency. McCarthy was growing increasingly frustrated with stock music sites that are difficult to navigate and make finding audio to convey an emotional message like searching for a needle in a haystack. McCarthy was convinced he could build a better system and set to work on a side project with a buddy and $2,500.
When Musicbed launched, it had 35 musicians whose work was available to sample and purchase. Now, the company boasts more than 600 artists and the operation has been moved to a 9 acre sprawl. With an increase in film production, demand is high and pay is lucrative. Bands earn an average of $1,200 a month and the top 10% earn 6 figures. In 2014, the highest grossing artist brought home over $700,000! Of course, getting signed with Musicbed is competitive business and only comprises 1% of submissions, but if you think you’ve got what it takes, you can get all the details from Guidelive’s Tiney Ricciardi or go straight to Musicbed.com.
