When Neil Peart sat down with Drumhead Magazine for their November/December issue, he mentioned how he now viewed himself as a “retired drummer” thanks to the way his daughter describes him to her school friends.
Speaking with ClassicRock, Geddy Lee clarified what Peart meant when he said ‘retired.’ “There’s really nothing to say,” Lee explained. “I think Neil is just explaining his reasons for not wanting to tour, with the toll that it’s taking on his body. That’s all I would care to comment on it.”
As of now, no decision has been made about Rush’s future. While the band will take a break from touring, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll stop making music together. “We’ll get together eventually and chat about things,” Lee continued. “But in my view, there is certainly nothing surprising in what he said. Neil just feels that he has to explain with all the thousands of people asking, ‘Why no more tours?’ He needs to explain his side of it.”
Peart has stated he wants to spend more time with his family, while guitarist Alex Lifeson has cited health issues as a reason for taking a break.
