The legendary Carlos Santana joined Billy Kidd for All Access Pass this week.
The ten-time Grammy winner discussed many things with us, including his opinion on music today, his nephew’s Idol audition and of course American Idol, the show.
In the interview, Billy asked Carlos if shows like American Idol focus too much on the image and the singing, without the musicianship? “Absolutely,” Carlos said. “Everything about TV, it’s about how you look, not how you sound. Whether it’s the Grammys… All the awards… People have listened to the wrong people, and so the majority of the energy goes into the image rather than the sound that makes you immortal.”
Carlos is however, very excited for his nephew, Adam Lasher, who tried out for American Idol this season. “I’m so proud of him, he’s a miracle child. He did it with such natural, normal easiness. He has the charisma thing happening.”
Lasher made it through to the Hollywood Round of the competition after his audition impressed the judges, particularly Jennifer Lopez.
You can see his musicianship, which is what his uncle is talking about above, in the video below.
Carlos also talked about his new album Corazon, his upcoming tour & his new autobiography. “It’s a blessing to acknowledge the miracles. I’m 67 and by pure grace, I’m relevant. Some people are my age, and I don’t mean to be disrespectful to them, but they’re not relevant right now,” said the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.” They’re like a song on a juke box from the Twilight Zone… I feel that I can go to the studio right now with Lady Gaga to Andre Bocelli, or Sting, or Prince, or Metallica… And create some beauty, you know? So, I have a lot of be grateful for.”
Billy also wondered what his musical influence was, in particular, how did he get the tone of his guitar to sound so smooth? “A big part of that is my mom and my dad, although, a part of that is B.B. King… I think that I’m the closest to that frequency of how he bends the notes.”
