R.E.M.’s Peter Buck Working On Solo Album

The breakup of R.E.M. may have surprised music fans last year, but the Athens, Ga. trio was calm and collected on their last press waltz, saying things like, “Splitting up now feels perfect.”

Now guitarist Peter Buck is moving forward on his first solo album, according to Scott McCaughey, a featured R.E.M. player for 17 years and frequent Buck collaborator.

In an interview with the Seattle Sounds show on 97.3 KIRO FM, McCaughey revealed that he’s working on Buck’s release, which he said was going to be “out” there. McCaughey also revealed that Buck, who’s produced records for the likes of Uncle Tupelo and the Feelies and just last year appeared on the Decemberists‘ “The King is Dead,” may sing on the project – something he never did with R.E.M.

Buck is toying around with the idea of releasing the album exclusively on vinyl (no downloads, either), according to McCaughey. No surprise that the R.E.M. guys love vinyl – bassist Mike Mills is scheduled to DJ an all-vinyl set on Atlanta’s 92.9 Dave FM on March 22.

As for the other members of R.E.M., frontman Michael Stipe was quick to say he had no immediate plans for solo work upon the group’s 2011 disbanding, while Mills has not announced any new releases. McCaughey also discussed the seminal college rock act’s breakup in the Seattle Sounds interview.
