[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Cyndi Lauper[/lastfm] was a big supporter of helping Japan after last years devastating earthquake and tsunami.

One year later the singer wants the Japanese people to know that she hasn’t forgotten them.

Lauper had scheduled a shows in Japan last March, and after the massive quake and fear of radiation from the tsunami-stricken nuclear power plant in Fukushima she stayed and performed. She said it was to console survivors with her music, and Japan has admired her for it.

She’s now back in the country to perform again. Lauper said Monday that she is urging people to buy things from the disaster-hit areas to help people there get back on their feet.

“It’s a big tragedy but everybody is trying to move forward. I just want to say, hey, don’t forget about Japan,” Lauper told a news conference in Tokyo.

Lauper has traveled to the tsunami-hit areas, and she was struck by how people in Fukushima seemed to still be shaken by radiation fears and that they feel isolated. Lauper has raised concern about the lack of visitors to northern Japan,

The government has been criticized for confusion, delays, miscommunication and attempts to play down the severity of the nuclear accident, the worst since Chernobyl. The earthquake and tsunami destroyed vital cooling systems at the plant, resulting in the melting of three reactor cores and a large release of radiation, forcing about 100,000 people to evacuate.

Lauper has said the government, “should come clean with what the real deal is” so people know the truth. “When you don’t know, you are fearful, and you feel powerless. Information is power.”
