Today is [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Gary Numan[/lastfm]’s birthday!!

And in celebration, Jack FM is making Davey the Intern spend the night in his car on Harry Hines Boulevard!!

Poor kid will do anything for a buck.

He is considered a pioneer of electronic music.

Born and raised in west London, Gary Numan’s interest in music began at an early age.  He started writing songs as a teenager and played in numerous local bands before forming his own, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tubeway Army[/lastfm], in 1977.  Two years later, the band’s second album, Replicas, soared to the top of the British charts on the strength of “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?“  The single spent four weeks at No. 1 on the U.K. Singles chart and was the first synthesizer-based record to become a hit in the post-punk era.

Capitalizing on his new-found success, Gary Numan released the single “Cars” in August 1979.  Inspired by an incident of road rage, “Cars” was a smash on both sides of the Atlantic, peaking at No. 1 in England and climbing to No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The album The Pleasure Principle came a month later, and its positive commercial reception helped pave the way for such future synthpop acts as [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Human League[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Depeche Mode[/lastfm].

In the decades since, Gary Numan has managed to sustain his career on his own terms.  Last year, he produced his 16th studio album, the industrial rock-based Dead Son Rising.  The album was a hit in Germany, where it reached No. 5 on the Alternative chart.

Later this spring, Numan will release the DVD Machine Music: The Best of Gary Numan and will also embark on a European tour.

Here’s the video for Jack’s Song of the Day, “Cars.”  They just don’t make ’em like they used to.
