With over 55 million albums sold worldwide, Coldplay are one of the most popular bands in music today.

Formed in 1996 by singer Chris Martin and guitarist [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jonny Buckland[/lastfm], Coldplay exploded onto the scene with their debut album, Parachutes.  Released in 2000, Parachutes was an international phenomenon, peaking at No. 1 in their native England and selling more than two million copies in the States.  The album produced such hit singles as “Shiver,” “Trouble,” “Don’t Panic” and the popular “Yellow.”

The equally-successful A Rush of Blood to the Head followed in ’02, and a year later, readers of Rolling Stone magazine named Coldplay the best artist of 2003.

After a short break, the English rockers returned to the charts with 2005’s X & Y.  The album, regarded as one of the year’s best, debuted at No. 1 in several countries, including the U.S.  The single “Speed of Sound” was a Top 10 hit on pop radio, while “Fix You” landed at No. 18 on the Modern Rock chart.

In 2008, Coldplay scored their first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Viva la Vida” from the triple-platinum Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.  The single earned the band Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.  The album also won for Best Rock Album.

Mylo Xyloto was released in October 2011, and it was yet another global success for the band.  Mylo Xyloto debuted atop the charts in over 30 countries, becoming Coldplay’s fifth No. 1 album in the United Kingdom (third in the U.S.).  It has already produced two Top 20 hits, “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” and “Paradise.”

Coldplay are currently gearing up for their 2012 Mylo Xyloto world tour, which kicks off April 17 in Edmonton, Alberta.  The show rolls into Dallas’ American Airlines Center June 22nd and 23rd.  Tickets are on sale now.

Check out this clip of Coldplay performing “Viva la Vida.”  Five years of Spanish class, and Jack FM has no idea what that means…
