Shake Your Booty For Harry Casey’s Birthday

Happy Birthday to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]KC and the Sunshine Band[/lastfm]’s Harry Casey!!

And to celebrate, Jack FM will do a little dance, make a little love and get down tonight.

They are the epitome of the disco era.

Formed in Miami in 1973 by record store employee Harry Casey, KC and the Sunshine Band’s first break came with the release of the singles “Blow Your Whistle” and “Sound Your Funky Horn.”  Both landed in the Top 30 on Billboard‘s R&B chart, prompting the band to release their debut album, Do It Good, in 1974.  However, despite the moderate success of the singles, the album failed to make an impact.

In July 1975, KC and the Sunshine Band scored the commercial breakthrough they were looking for with their second album.  KC and the Sunshine Band was an instant hit, selling over three million copies and peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard 200.  The singles “Get Down Tonight” and “That’s the Way (I Like It)” became disco anthems, and both went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The band’s momentum continued with 1976’s Part 3.  The album was another multi-platinum seller, and it produced two more No. 1 hits, “(Shake Shake Shake) Shake Your Booty” and “I’m Your Boogie Man.”  The single “Keep It Comin’ Love,” which is Jack’s Song of the Day, also peaked in the Top 5 and was a huge hit in other countries as well.

As a new decade dawned, disco gave way to new wave, and KC and the Sunshine Band’s popularity started to fade.  They released four more albums (albeit unsuccessfully) before leader Harry Casey retired from music in 1985.

But his retirement was short-lived.  In ’91, Casey reformed the group with new members and began touring once again.

Since then, KC and the Sunshine Band have continued performing and recording.  Their most recent release was the 2007 album Yummy.

Check out KC and the Sunshine Band performing “That’s the Way (I Like It)” on The Midnight Special.  Damn, that’s a lot of polyester on one stage.
