Today is [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]R.E.M.[/lastfm] frontman [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Michael Stipe[/lastfm]’s birthday!!

And to celebrate the occasion, Jack FM is making “Electrolite” our Song of the Day!!

Too bad we used up all our party favors on New Year’s Eve.

With over 85 million albums sold worldwide, R.E.M. were one of the more successful and popular alternative rock bands to emerge from the 1980s.

Formed in Athens, Georgia by singer Michael Stipe, guitarist [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Peter Buck[/lastfm], bassist [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Mike Mills[/lastfm] and drummer [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bill Berry[/lastfm], R.E.M. spent their early years quietly building a fan base both on college radio and in the underground music scene before finding success in 1987 with the release of “The One I Love.”  The single peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, thus thrusting the band into the mainstream.

In 1988, R.E.M. released their major-label debut, Green.  The album was a hit, selling more than two million copies and producing the No. 1 rock singles “Orange Crush” and “Stand.”  The Grammy Award-winning Out of Time followed three years later, along with Automatic for the People in ’92 and Monster in ’94.  Each album debuted atop the Billboard 200.

By the mid ’90s, R.E.M. had grown from a cult band into an international super act.  In 1996, they released their tenth studio album, New Adventures in Hi-Fi.  It landed at No. 2 on the charts, and the single “Electrolite” was a modest hit in both the U.S. and abroad.  However, New Adventures in Hi-Fi would be R.E.M.’s last album with drummer Bill Berry, who amicably left the band the following year.

For the next 15 years, R.E.M continued as a trio, releasing five more albums before calling it quits in September 2011.

Here’s R.E.M performing “It’s The End of the World as We Know It.”  Isn’t that suppose to happen in December?!
