We sure hope he likes the macaroni portrait we sent him.

Formed in Buffalo, New York in 1986, the Goo Goo Dolls have sold close to nine million albums in the U.S. alone and have scored 14 Top 10 singles on the Billboard charts.  But success didn’t come overnight for the trio.

Originally known as the Sex Maggots, the Goo Goo Dolls were forced to change their name when a promoter refused to book them for a gig.  In 1987, the band released their self-titled debut album, which was recorded in three days on a budget of $750.  For the next eight years, the Dolls played in and around their hometown opening for punk bands while continuing to release albums to little fanfare.

But all that changed in 1995 with the release of their fifth album, A Boy Named Goo.  The album, which reflected a more polished, commercial sound, peaked at #27 on the Billboard 200 and sold over two million copies on the strength of the single “Name.”  “Name” went to #1 on the rock charts and also landed in the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Three years later as he was battling a bout of writer’s block, Goo Goo Dolls’ frontman Johnny Rzeznik was asked to write a song for the movie City of Angels.  He complied, and the end result was “Iris.”  Perhaps their biggest and best-known single, “Iris” spent 18 weeks atop Billboard‘s Hot 100 Airplay chart and earned the Dolls three Grammy nominations, including one for Song of the Year.

Dizzy Up the Girl followed in September 1998, solidifying the Goo Goo Dolls’ status as one of the most successful pop-rock bands of the late ’90s.  The album sold over three million copies and brought the band a whole new legion of fans.  Dizzy Up the Girl spawned three Top 40 singles:  “Broadway,” “Black Balloon” and “Slide,” which also went to #1 on the Adult Pop chart.

In the years since, the Goo Goo Dolls have continued racking up the hits with songs such as “Here Is Gone,” “Give a Little Bit,” “Better Days” and “Before It’s Too Late.”  In 2010, they released their ninth album, Something for the Rest of Us.  It debuted at #7 on the Billboard 200.

The Goo Goo Dolls are currently writing material for a new album and are scheduled to play a New Year’s Eve show at Caesar’s in Atlantic City.
