Jack FM would like to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!!

But before you fall into that turkey-induced coma, be sure to check out our Song of the Day:  [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Alanis Morissette[/lastfm]’s “Thank U.”

Because nothing says “thanksgiving” like a Canadian singing about a Middle Eastern country!

Before she became the voice of scorned women everywhere, Alanis Morissette first rose to prominence as a teen idol in her native Canada.  Compared to both [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Debbie Gibson[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tiffany[/lastfm], Alanis released two successful dance-pop albums and scored a handful of Top 40 hits on the Canadian Singles chart all before her 20th birthday.

In 1993, Alanis Morissette ditched the bubblegum pop for rock, and two years later released Jagged Little Pill.  The album, her first to be released internationally, was a smash hit around the world.  It sold an astounding 33 million copies and topped the charts in several countries, including the U.S.  The success of Jagged Little Pill was propelled by the singles “You Oughta Know,” “Hand in My Pocket,” “Ironic,” “You Learn” and “Head Over Feet.”  All five singles landed in the Top 10 on Billboard‘s Hot 100, turning Alanis into a bona fide rock superstar.

The Canadian singer’s follow-up, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, came in November 1998 and debuted in the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart.  The album sold nearly 470,000 copies in its first week of release, the most for a female artist at that time.  The lead-off single was “Thank U,” a song Alanis wrote after a 1997 trip to India.  “Thank U” became a #1 hit on Adult Top 40 radio and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Since then, Alanis has released three more albums, although none have come close to matching the huge commercial success of Jagged Little Pill.  Her most recent was 2008’s Flavors of Entanglement, which peaked at #8 on the Billboard 200 and produced the moderate hit “Underneath.”

After taking time off in 2010 to become a wife and mother, Alanis Morissette returned to the studio earlier this year and is currently at work on her next album.

Here’s Alanis performing “You Oughta Know” from the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards.  Wouldn’t it be way cooler if this was about Full House‘s Uncle Jesse instead of Joey?

FYI: India is NOT Middle East! It’s south Asia!
