Today is [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tom Petty[/lastfm]’s birthday!
And in celebration, Jack FM is making “I Won’t Back Down” our Song of the Day.
Now, who’s up for a piece of Alice in Wonderland cake?!
Throughout his 35-year career, rocker Tom Petty has sold over 60 million albums, thus securing his place in music history.
Tom first rose to fame in the late ’70s as frontman for the band [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers[/lastfm]. They released two albums before finally breaking through with 1979’s Damn the Torpedoes. That album peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 and produced such classic hits as “Don’t Do Me Like That,” “Here Comes My Girl” and “Refugee.” The follow-up, Hard Promises, was another Top 10 album for the band, as were their next two releases, Long After Dark and Southern Accents.
1989 saw the release of Tom Petty’s first solo album, Full Moon Fever. It was an instant commercial and critical success, selling over five million copies in the U.S. and landing at #3 on the charts. Full Moon Fever spawned three #1 Mainstream Rock hits: “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” “Free Fallin’” and Jack’s Song of the Day, “I Won’t Back Down.” Since then, Tom has released two more solo albums, 1994’s Wildflower and 2006’s Highway Companion.
In 2002, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and their most recent album was last year’s Mojo. Today, they remain one of music’s most popular and influential artists.
Check out Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performing their 1977 Top 40 hit “Breakdown.” Jack FM would like you to know we will suffer our own breakdown if the Rangers don’t win the World Series.
