Today is [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Ziggy Marley[/lastfm]’s birthday!!

And to mark the occasion, Jack FM will spend the rest of the day speaking with a Jamaican accent.

That will TOTALLY drive our co-workers crazy!!

Like father, like son.

Ziggy Marley, the eldest child of legendary reggae singer [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bob Marley[/lastfm], made his music debut in 1979 on his father’s single “Children Playing in the Streets.”  Shortly after Bob’s death in 1981, Ziggy decided to carry on the Marley legacy and formed a group with his siblings Cedella, Stephen and Sharon.

Calling themselves [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers[/lastfm], the group released their debut album, Play the Game, in 1985.  This was followed by Hey World in ’86 and Conscious Party in ’88.  It was with this latter album that the Melody Makers scored their first big commercial success.  Conscious Party peaked at #23 on the Billboard 200 and won the group a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.  The single “Tumblin’ Down” was a #1 hit on the R&B chart, while Jack’s Song of the Day, “Tomorrow People,” cracked the Top 40 on Billboard‘s Hot 100.

After nearly two decades as the driving creative force behind the Melody Makers, Ziggy Marley stepped out on his own and released his first solo album, Dragonfly, in 2003.  He won another Grammy for 2006’s Love is My Religion, and his ’09 album, Family Time, debuted in the top spot on the U.S. Reggae chart.

Earlier this year, Ziggy released his fourth solo album, Wild & Free.  Produced by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Don Was[/lastfm], the album features guests such as actor Woody Harrelson, rapper [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Heavy D[/lastfm] and Ziggy’s son, Daniel.  The album’s title-track was even used in California’s Proposition 19 campaign to legalize recreational marijuana.

Ziggy Marley is currently on a month-long North American tour.

Check out this live acoustic performance of Ziggy Marley’s hit “Love is My Religion.”  Not to get all sentimental, but Jack FM thinks the world would be a better place if love was everyone’s religion.
