Happy Birthday to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tesla[/lastfm] singer Jeff Keith!

And Jack FM is celebrating by making “Love Song” our Song of the Day!

Oh, the power ballad… showcasing rockers’ sensitive sides since 1976.

Unlike most of their ’80s peers, Tesla’s style was simple.  They favored jeans and T-shirts over leather pants, big hair and flashy makeup.  That image, along with their hard rock sound, has stood the test of time.  So is it any surprise the band from Sacramento is still going strong 25 years later?

Tesla first impacted the music scene in 1986 with their debut album, Mechanical Resonance.  It peaked at #32 on the Billboard 200 and sold over a million copies.  The album produced two Mainstream Rock singles: “Modern Day Cowboy” and “Little Suzi.”

Three years later, the band scored again with The Great Radio Controversy.  Landing at #18 on the charts, The Great Radio Controversy spawned one of Tesla’s biggest hits, “Love Song.”  The power ballad was a success on both rock and pop radio, earning the band new fans across the board.

In 1990, Tesla decided to change things up a bit and release a live acoustic album.  Five Man Acoustical Jam was another commercial success, selling a million copies and peaking at #12 on the Billboard 200.  Their cover of “Signs” proved to be quite popular and was a Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Tesla released two more albums before taking a break in 1994.  The band reformed six years later and haven’t stopped since.  Their most recent album, Twisted Wires and the Acoustic Sessions, was released earlier this year.

Tesla is currently gearing up for a fall tour and will be at Dallas’ Palladium Ballroom on November 11.

Check out this recent performance of “Signs.”  And here’s a fun game for you: while watching, see how many mullets you can spot in the audience.
