Happy Birthday to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Pink Floyd[/lastfm]’s [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Roger Waters[/lastfm]!!

And to celebrate, Jack FM is going to listen to The Dark Side of the Moon non-stop for 24 hours.

Hey, does anybody know where we can get a needle for our Smurfs record player?

They are one of the biggest and most influential rock bands in history.

Formed in 1965 by students Roger Waters, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Richard Wright[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nick Mason[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Syd Barrett[/lastfm], Pink Floyd first made a name for themselves in London’s underground music scene with their unique style of psychedelic rock.  Two years later, they released their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.  While the album was a Top 10 hit on the U.K. charts, it failed to make a splash in the States.  In December 1967, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]David Gilmour[/lastfm] joined Pink Floyd just months before Barrett was kicked out due to his increasing drug use and mental instability.  Following his departure, Waters became the band’s main songwriter and conceptual leader.

Pink Floyd released seven more albums before finally striking it big in 1973 with The Dark Side of the Moon.  The album was an immediate commercial success for the band.  It peaked at #1 on the Billboard Top LPs and Tapes chart, selling 15 million copies in the U.S. alone.  Since its release, The Dark Side of the Moon has become one of the best-selling albums of all-time and spent a record-breaking 741 weeks on the charts.  It also spawned the hit singles “Money” and “Us and Them,” which is Jack’s Song of the Day.

The band’s streak continued with 1975’s Wish You Were Here and 1979’s The Wall.  Both landed in the top spot on the charts, and each sold more than ten million copies, securing the band’s place in rock history.

After the release of The Wall, Pink Floyd embarked on an elaborate tour.  However, by this time, relationships within the band were severely strained.  In fact, Richard Wright had quit during the recording of The Wall, but came back for the tour.

In 1983, Pink Floyd recorded one more album with Waters, The Final Cut.  Waters ultimately left, calling the band a “spent force.”  He then tried to legally keep Gilmour and Mason from performing as Pink Floyd.  The dispute was settled out of court, with Gilmour and Mason being allowed to use the band’s name and with Waters being released from all contractual obligations.

After nearly 25 years apart, the classic Pink Floyd line-up of Waters, Mason, Wright and Gilmour reunited for 2005’s Live 8 concert at London’s Hyde Park.  With the death of Richard Wright in 2008, this would be the last performance with all four members.

Pink Floyd have sold over 200 million albums worldwide.  In 1996, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and are ranked at #51 on Rolling Stone‘s list of “The 100 Greatest Artists of All-Time.”
