Jacks Song Of The Day: Skillet

Happy Fourth of July!!

And what better way to celebrate America’s birthday than with hot dogs, fireworks and Jack FM‘s Song of the Day!

Call it divine intervention.

When his pastor suggested he form a band, John Cooper listened, and Skillet was born.

Formed in Memphis in 1996, Skillet released its self-titled debut album, and the band’s music quickly caught on with Christian rock fans.

But it wasn’t until the release of its sixth album, Collide, that Skillet started to make an impact outside of the Christian market.  The album was released by Lava Records in May 2004.  It peaked at # 179 on the Billboard 200 chart and earned the band a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album.

Riding high on the success of Collide, Skillet released its next album, Comatose, in October 2006.  Comatose debuted at # 55 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 500,000 copies.  It was Skillet’s first album to be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.  The band was once again nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album.

During this time, Skillet’s audience began to broaden due to its touring with such mainstream rock acts as Seether, Puddle of Mud, Three Days Grace, Shinedown and Theory of a Deadman.

In 2009, Skillet released its most successful album to date, Awake.  It debuted at # 2 on Billboard‘s 200 chart, # 1 on the Top Alternative Albums chart and # 2 on the Top Rock Albums chart.  The first single, “Awake and Alive,” charted at # 100 on the Billboard Hot 100, the first Skillet song to do so.  “Awake and Alive” is also included on the Transformers: Dark of the Moon soundtrack.

The album’s sixth single is “It’s Not Me It’s You,” and it’s Jack’s Song of the Day.  According to Skillet, the song is about getting rid of a negative influence in your life and realizing that that’s what’s been bringing you down.  Singer John Cooper says it’s his favorite song on Awake because of its “in your face” rock sound.

Skillet is currently on tour and will be at the Six Flags amphitheater July 22.
