Jack FM‘s Song of the Day is “Sorry” from [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Smithereens[/lastfm].

That’s because we’re pretty sure we did something this past weekend we need to apologize for.  The problem is, we can’t quite remember what it was we did.

Think of The Smithereens as the little band that could.

Formed in New Jersey in 1980, The Smithereens are known for writing and playing catchy ’60s-influenced power pop.  Their influences include [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Buddy Holly[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Who[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Clash[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Elvis Costello[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Move[/lastfm].

The Smithereens first gained notoriety when their single, “Blood and Roses,” was chosen to be the theme song for the 1986 movie, Dangerously Close.  The song’s video was played frequently on MTV, and it was even featured in an episode of Miami Vice.

To date, the highest position The Smithereens have reached on the Billboard charts was in 1990 when their album, 11, peaked at # 41.  The album’s first single, “A Girl Like You,” was originally written to be the title track for the movie, Say Anything.  The song went to # 38 on the pop charts and to # 2 on the rock charts.

Throughout their career, The Smithereens have collaborated with a wide array of artists such as [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Suzanne Vega[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Belinda Carlisle[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Graham Parker[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Kinks[/lastfm].  They have also influenced others, most notably [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kurt Cobain[/lastfm] while he was writing [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nirvana[/lastfm]’s Nevermind.

The Smithereens continue to tour and make music on their own terms 31 years after forming.  Their 13th studio album, 2011, was released this past April, and the first single, “Sorry,” is Jack’s Song of the Day.

Here’s the video for The Smithereens’ “Blood and Roses.”  Are we the only ones kind of creeped out by the lead singer’s haircut?
